Focused Shockwave Therapy, a useful tool in augmenting the repair of bone tendon and ligament.
It is of particular benefit where there is an injury to bone or where there is damage at the attachment of a tendon or ligament. The energy imparted to the tissue by the shockwave therapy unit stimulates activity in the bone and fibre producing cells.
Radial shockwaves are produced by a compressed air “gun” which has a ball bearing in it and repeatedly goes backwards and forwards creating many blows to the surface of the limb. The energy of shockwaves produced in this way dissipate rapidly as they go deeper.
Focused shockwaves on the other hand are produced in a probe which focuses the energy at a point inside the body. (These machines were originally designed to break up kidney and gall stones from outside the body). By using a selection of probes focused at differing depths it is possible to treat lesions at different depths below the surface.
Stables Equine Practice have a focused shockwave treatment unit rather than a radical shockwave unit.
